Can you play League of Legends on a Mac?
Short answer: Play the official Mac version instead. The Windows client requires Riot Vanguard's kernel driver, which Grapple can't run — but Riot ships a native macOS client.
What we know
Riot publishes League of Legends for macOS as well as Windows. That native client is the right way to play on a Mac, and it doesn't need Grapple at all.
The Windows version uses Riot Vanguard, which includes a kernel mode driver. Wine-based tools such as Grapple run in user space and can't load Windows kernel drivers, so the Windows client won't work through Grapple.
With patch 25.S1.2 Riot began rolling out Vanguard for Mac as "Embedded Vanguard", built directly into the Mac game client. Riot said cheaters had been disguising themselves as Mac environments — another reason a Windows client in a compatibility layer is not a path forward.
What to do instead
Use the official Mac version described above — it's supported by the publisher and needs no Grapple.

Why doesn't League of Legends work with Grapple?
League of Legends relies on Riot Vanguard, which uses a kernel-mode driver on Windows. Grapple is built on Wine, which runs Windows programs in user space without a Windows kernel, so that driver can't load — and the publisher doesn't allow Wine-based layers. The same applies to CrossOver and other Wine-based tools. Only the game's developer can change that.
Will a future Grapple update make League of Legends work?
Not by itself. Anti-cheat blocks like this are decided by the publisher, not by compatibility tools. If the publisher changes its policy, we'll re-test and update this page.
Is there a Mac version of League of Legends?
League of Legends has an official macOS client. Since patch 25.S1.2 (January 2025) it includes Riot's Embedded Vanguard, built into the game — nothing extra to install. Download it from Riot.
